The piece of art COMING IN HOT was created by David Scheppegrell, Retired Sergeant Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department for 40 years and co-founder of Right Moves for Youth to help youth and teens succeed. David presented this art to Tom Baker, co-founder of Jackson County Veterans Organization, and has created a website with online donation capabilities for JCVO.org.
He searched several antique stores before finally locating a piece of the fuselage from a Huey helicopter that had been flown in Vietnam. That piece of the Huey had three bullet holes in it. “The most I counted in our Huey was 14 from one firefight,” Baker said. “David wrote the number 14 on the panel, the average life expectancy (in days) of a doorgunner in Vietnam.
The number 22 is also pointed out on the panel, which represents the number of veterans who kill themselves every day.

I managed to survive six-and-a-half months as a doorgunner, although we were shot down twice. I was able to crawl away from both. Not everyone did. I was lucky!”
